Conference Talk

Nigerian Type and Graphic Design

Nov 15, 2024

Jordan Belonwu alongside Joseph Adesiyan will be speaking on type design generally and how the distinction exists within type design in Nigeria. The talk will also feature their recent expedition to documenting general design in Nigeria with a focus on Nigerian elements in a bid to decolonise Nigerian graphic design identity. They will highlight the short background that exists within type design in Nigeria and how that has led to a small but significant shift in the perception of type in Nigeria. Moreover, they will introduce the typeface they worked on for Sporting Lagos, the truck style references and the process for creating the typeface. They will also dive into the process of extending the typeface to include letters and finally show the process of including multiple weights.
